Drive With Joe · Stowmarket, Suffolk

Getting ready for your first driving lesson

Starting to drive is exciting, and it is completely normal to feel a little nervous. You don't need to know how to drive before your first lesson — that's what lessons are for.

Before your lesson

A few simple things to prepare

There's no need to overthink it. These basics will help you arrive ready to learn.

▣

Bring your provisional licence

Bring your valid UK photocard provisional driving licence so your instructor can check it before you drive. If you have a different licence situation, check with Joe before the lesson.

✓

Wear comfortable footwear

Choose shoes that stay securely on your feet and let you feel the pedals. Avoid bulky soles, high heels, loose footwear or anything that makes pedal control difficult.

♡

Get a good night's rest

Try to arrive rested, hydrated and ready to concentrate. If you're feeling unwell or unusually tired, let Joe know before the lesson.

What happens during the first lesson?

Your lesson will be tailored to you. We'll work at a pace that helps you feel safe and supported.

We'll start with a chat

We'll discuss any previous experience, what you'd like to achieve and anything you're worried about. It's fine if you've never sat in the driver's seat before.

Get familiar with the car

You'll be shown the cockpit drill and how to adjust the seat, head restraint, mirrors and seat belt. We'll explain the controls before you use them.

Build skills step by step

Depending on your starting point and the conditions, we'll introduce basic controls and safe routines gradually. There is no expectation to master everything in one lesson.

Feeling nervous? That's okay.

Many learners feel anxious at first. Tell Joe what you're feeling, ask questions whenever you need to, and remember that mistakes are part of learning. We'll focus on understanding, practice and progress — not perfection.

Before we begin: make sure you have told Joe about any relevant eyesight or licence requirements, and ask if you're unsure what to bring. Your instructor will check the necessary details before driving starts.

After your lesson, think about one thing that went well and one thing you'd like to practise next time. Progress comes from building good habits over time.
