Getting Ready for Your Driving Test

A simple checklist to help you feel prepared, know what to expect and give yourself the best chance to show the safe driving you’ve practised with Joe.

Before test day

Get the basics sorted early

You don’t need to cram the night before. Make the practical arrangements in advance, then focus on resting and arriving in good time.

▣

Check your appointment

Confirm the date, time and test centre on your booking confirmation. Plan your journey and allow time for unexpected delays.

▤

Bring the right documents

Bring your valid UK driving licence and any other documents specified in your booking confirmation. Check the official guidance beforehand if you’re unsure.

✓

Get a decent night's sleep

Prepare what you need the evening before, eat as you normally would and aim to arrive rested rather than trying to learn everything at the last minute.

Important: check the latest requirements on the official GOV.UK driving test page before test day. If you arrive without the required documents, your test may not go ahead.
Your checklist

Before you leave home

Practical arrangements

  • Confirm the test time and location.
  • Have your driving licence ready.
  • Check the route and allow plenty of time.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and suitable footwear for driving.
  • Eat and drink normally; avoid arriving hungry or dehydrated.

Driving preparation

  • Review any feedback from your recent lessons.
  • Refresh the Show Me, Tell Me questions.
  • Remember your routines: observations, planning, control and safe decisions.
  • Ask Joe about anything you’re unsure of before the test.
  • Don’t try to make last-minute changes to every habit.

On the day: focus on one decision at a time

You’re not expected to drive perfectly. Keep checking your surroundings, plan ahead, respond safely and follow the examiner’s directions. If you make a mistake, don’t assume you’ve failed. Safely continue and concentrate on the next part of the drive.

During the test

What to expect

Vehicle safety question

You’ll be asked one Tell Me question before driving and one Show Me question while driving. If you don’t know an answer, stay calm and do your best.

Independent driving

You’ll normally follow a sat nav or traffic signs for part of the test. If you miss a turn, don’t panic. Continue safely; the examiner will guide you.

If you need an instruction repeated

It’s okay to ask the examiner to repeat an instruction if you haven’t heard or understood it. Take a moment to process it and make safe decisions.

Remember: safety matters more than rushing. Never take a risk to follow an instruction at all costs. Continue to observe, plan and drive safely.

Use your final lessons well

Ask Joe to practise the areas you want to feel more confident with and talk through any remaining questions. The aim is to be a safe, independent driver — not simply to memorise a test route.
