Drive With Joe · Stowmarket, Suffolk

Private practice between lessons

Extra practice can help you build experience and confidence. Make every drive safe, legal and focused on the skills you're developing in lessons.

Make practice count

Before you set off

Private practice is optional. Talk to Joe about what would be useful for your current stage and choose simple goals for each drive.

✓

Use a suitable supervisor

Your accompanying driver must meet the legal requirements for supervising a learner, including being at least 21 and holding a full licence for the type of car you are driving for at least three years. Check the current rules if unsure.

▣

Check the insurance

Make sure the car is properly insured for you to drive as a learner. Check who is covered, the vehicle, the permitted use and any policy conditions before setting off. The car must also be roadworthy and display L plates where required.

↗

Choose a clear goal

Practise a small number of skills that you have already discussed with your instructor. Start in a quiet, suitable area and only move on to busier roads when it is safe and appropriate.

How to make each drive useful

Keep it manageable

Short, calm drives are often more helpful than trying to do too much. Choose a route and conditions that suit your current ability, and avoid pressure or distractions.

Practise good habits

Build routines around observations, speed, positioning, planning and responding safely to other road users. If you are unsure what to do, stop somewhere safe and discuss it with your supervisor.

Review afterwards

Think about what went well and what felt difficult. Tell Joe at your next lesson so you can work through questions and correct any habits that may have developed.

Remember: private practice supports professional lessons but does not replace them. Never drive unless you meet the learner-driver requirements, have appropriate insurance and are accompanied by a legally qualified supervisor. Follow all policy conditions and road traffic laws.
